Oversized Jellybeans hang over the doorway and ‘Build me up Buttercup’ plays inside.  Your mouth begins to water the second you step through the front doorway. As you look around you half expect to cross a chocolate river but there is no need to worry, you don’t need a golden ticket to this paradise.

Opening its doors in Downtown Chico summer of 2007, Powell’s Sweet Shoppe is known for helping customers reveal their inner child each day. Offering old fashioned, vintage candy, the store provides customers a blast from their past.

Many stumble upon candy they did not know existed anymore and “just go crazy for it,” owner Nancy Carlson said.

With the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory movie playing in the background, along with a wide selection of old time candy, customers of all ages can feel like a kid in this candy store. Older generations can choose from a large assortment of candy from their childhood while younger generations can sample the same candy their parents and grandparents grew up with.  Nostalgic favorites include Razzles, Cup O Gold, Moon Pies and Flicks, according to Carlson.

While in the store, Carlson hears first-hand excitement from customers on a daily basis. Discovering their favorite childhood candy, customers are overheard commenting “this reminds me of going into our hometown candy store.” Carlson recalls, “Of course that was back when candy was a penny!”

Complementing the unique selection of candy, old school toys are also found in the store. Gumby, Tiddley Winks and Pick Up Sticks are just a few toys found on the shelves. Together, vintage candy and toys serve as wonderful gifts and stocking stuffers for the holidays. Whether you are in hopes of sparking memories of the past or giving younger generations a taste of history, Powell’s Sweet Shoppe is the perfect destination.
