As if the natural scenery of Downtown Chico and its tree-lined streets weren’t beautiful enough on its own, Chico is also home to some of the most unique and breathtaking public art pieces in Northern California. From large murals decorating the walls of buildings, to inspiring mosaic tiles benches and tranquil fountains, there’s much to see for art lovers and newbies alike.

Our Hands

At the Municipal Center Building off Main Street, this terrazzo sculpture was created by artist Donna Billick and was installed in Chico in 2000. Each hand measures six feet high and features images of Chico embedded in the surface.

Abbey Road

Painted by Chico artist Gregg Payne, this modern adaptation of the famous Beatles photo is on Main Street between ^1st and 2^nd streets^.

Peaces of Chico

As you enter Downtown Chico from the east, the colorful “Peaces of Chico” mural welcomes you. This collaborative project included more than a dozen Youth Nexus students from Butte County high schools working with local artist Gregg Payne.

Luminary Benches & Pedestal Art Seats

Featuring 16 pieces, these unique tile benches and pedestals line the streets of Downtown Chico. With inspiration from Jackson Pollock, Susan B. Anthony, and John Muir, the mosaic benches are a tribute to some of the visionaries who contributed to the shaping of Chico’s unique character.

John and Annie Bidwell

Seen from the Crush patio, one of Chico’s hottest happy hour spots, this beautifully painted mural honors the iconic couple who founded Chico.

Diamond Alley Arches

Kathleen Nartuhi and David Barta created these gorgeous mosaic-pillared arches in 2003. The arches are constructed of steel and 3,000 tiles painted by schoolchildren and depicting the diamond shape with endless variations. Enter through the arches on 3^rd or 4^th streets to access Diamond Alley next to the Diamond Hotel.

Dancing Trout Fountain

In front of City Hall, this tranquil fountain consists of a white granite base, with six identical trout spouting water from their mouths in unison. The inspiration for the Dancing Trout Fountain comes from the old days when townspeople gathered around the central well to collect water and share information.

City Plaza

In the heart of downtown Chico, the downtown plaza is home to unique pieces created by world-renowned artist Elizabeth Devereaux. She had a hand in designing the plaza, as well as contributing works like the World Map Fountain Mosaic, which highlights Chico’s location. Her other contributions consist of elm leaf light fixtures and chess tables with inlaid mosaic game boards.
